The Saint Mark the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church Fabrique (which administers the budget) is collecting funds to make additional renovations to its place of worship. The church recently renovated its iconic bell tower following a successful fundraising campaign which concluded with a surplus of $30,000. With its subsequent rolling toonie campaign, the Fabrique is looking to amass enough funds to deal with unexpected renovations.

If able to avoid surprises, the Fabrique would like to replace the roof shingles, repair sewer line, upgrade attic insulation and upgrade the heating plant. Members would also like to modernize flooring, washrooms, the parish kitchen and the hall and possibly install a new street sign.

The Fabrique will present all their projects and estimated costs in their comprehensive Five-Year Renovation Plan during their Annual General Meeting on May 22. To date, the Fabrique has collected $5,703 as part of their rolling toonie campaign.

Aylmer’s Saint Mark’s Church held its annual Elder Appreciation lunch, June 13, in the church hall.  In previous years, the event was open to parishioners 80 years of age and older and attracted about 30. This year, the Catholic Women’s Guild (CWG) of Saint Mark’s, under new direction, opened the lunch to all elders, without age limit, and the turnout was close to 120. Food and drink were provided by the CWG. Flowers from private gardens and Beauchamp Funeral Home was presented to the guests.

During the lunch, elders who were asked to share valuable life lessons, offered these bits of sage advice: “one day at a time”, “smile as much as possible, whenever you can”, “humility is the key to life”,  “let go of my pride”, and “put one foot in front of the other and keep on going!”

 St. Mark’s Catholic Church
Father Dan Kelly Takes a leave
By Laurent Robillard-Cardinal

St. Mark’s Catholic Church parishioners received surprising news during mass, January 25. Father Dan Kelly announced he is taking a break. “I was very surprised when I heard the news,” said Ricardo Barajas, a church warden. “I don’t know why he’s taking a sabbatical month. Yes, most parishioners do like Fr. Kelly.” It was suggested by Gatineau’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese that Fr. Kelly take a month off. “He was experiencing stress-related problems. I told him I would find him a replacement for a month,” said Archbishop Paul-André Durocher. Retired Father Bob Smith will take over for February.

“They are the regular stresses of a pastoral life. No one approached me asking him to leave the church,” clarified Archbishop Durocher, adding that Fr. Kelly had seldom taken holidays since his nomination. St. Mark’s Pastoral Associate is also taking a month off, said Durocher. Seemingly, the holiday season was tiring and some rest is in order.

Fr. Dan Kelly, in his mid 40s, joined the Aylmer church in fall, 2012, after Father William Marrevee retired from St-Mark’s.  Archbishop Durocher had initially nominated 66-year-old Father Lomer-J Rooney as pastor for the Aylmer parish, September 1, 2012, to run until August 31, 2018. However, because of the move needed, the heavier workload, and a stressful summer, Fr Rooney declined the offer and returned to Our Lady of Annunciation where Fr. Kelly had served over the 2012 summer. The Bulletin called the church to talk to Fr. Kelly, but staff there said he was unavailable.
